About This Experience
Learn to carve your own piece of jewellery at this hands-on shell engraving workshop run by young Rarotongan artist Iaveta. Using specialised engraving machines and genuine parau shell, you'll design and engrave your own pendant, necklace or keychain to take home in a single four-hour session. Shell carving has deep roots across the Pacific, but Iaveta's workshop is the only place in the Cook Islands where you can sit down and learn the craft yourself.

"what_to_expect": "<div>This four-hour make-and-take workshop runs from 12pm to 4pm and is led by Iaveta, a self-taught artist who has been selling his work since he was 12. The young artist brings real skill and a relaxed, hands-on approach to every session.<br><br></div><div>Things kick off with a quick health and safety rundown covering the dust extractors and vacuum circuit pads in the studio, so you know exactly what everything does before you pick up a tool. From there, Iaveta introduces the engraving machines, which are lighter and easier to handle than a Dremel, making them well suited to first-timers.<br><br></div><div>You will practise drawing lines on a raw shell to get a feel for the machine and find your rhythm. Speed matters here as going too fast burns the shell and leaves thick, uneven lines, so coconut shells are used to help you dial in your control early on.<br><br></div><div>Once you are comfortable, you move to the design board to choose a pattern. You will trace your chosen design on paper multiple times and fill it with motifs such as birds, whales or traditional patterns before transferring it to your shell piece. Iaveta keeps the talking light and gets you engraving as quickly as possible.<br><br></div><div>The focus throughout the session is on doing rather than listening. Iaveta will show you the correct technique, including always engraving downward for clean lines, and if you hit a tricky spot he will demonstrate on a similar piece rather than stepping in to fix yours. You are welcome to ask for help at any point, and most participants do.<br><br></div><div>You choose your own design and Iaveta will not steer you away from something ambitious.<br><br>By 4pm you will leave with a finished small pendant, fully set up with a hook for earrings, string for a necklace, or the O-ring for your keychain, ready to go.</div>",
