Matavera Beach is on the northeastern side of Rarotonga, between Matangi Moana Beachside Villa and Seaspray Beach Villa.
The waters here are shallower, and the reef is closer to shore, making it less ideal for swimming compared to other Rarotongan beaches.
Due to its rocky shoreline and shallow waters, it’s not a top snorkelling spot, but you can still find some marine life near the reef.
Early mornings are perfect for catching the stunning sunrise, and whale-watching season (July–October) offers an extra special experience.
Can you see whales from Matavera Beach?
Yes! The beach’s proximity to deep ocean waters makes it one of the better spots in Rarotonga for spotting whales during the migration season.
Is Matavera Beach crowded?
No, it’s a quieter and more secluded spot compared to Rarotonga’s more popular beaches, making it ideal for a peaceful escape.
